On July 21, 2013 I will be walking with the MAXPRO team in the San Francisco AIDS walk for the 3rd year in a row. This is the 28th annual San Francisco AIDS Walk. This event raises money and awareness for those living with AIDS in San Francisco Bay Area. This year I’ve been given the opportunity to take a bigger part and help put together the MAXPRO team for this event.

The SF AIDS walk is held at Golden State Park every summer and has been going on since 1987. It was designed to raise funds for the SF AIDS Foundation & fight against the stigma that many associate with AIDS. The first walk raised $667,000 and had 6,000 participants. In the last 27 years this number has grown and we see thousands more people come and walk, and our donations grow. All the funds raised through the SF AIDS walk enables the SF AIDS Foundation and other health service organizations to continue providing services and knowledge about prevention as well as care and to advocate for the thousands of people living with HIV/AIDS in the San Francisco and Bay Area residents alone. Take a stand against the stigma that has become associated with HIV/AIDS by donating or walking with us.

It sounds like the opposite of what television, movies and dirty jokes would have us believe, but the truth is that life is not necessarily easy for the guy with a large penis. If you are someone who has a large penis, it might have been as much a source for angst as it is a source for fun, and in some cases, you may be facing serious problems for it.

A commercial a few years ago featuring pigs that turned into men once they purchased condoms definitely got the conversation going.

The genres most commonly watched by groups of teens and college students include comedy, action and horror. A scene featuring characters obviously stopping the physical action to get a condom is easy to include in these films, since they typically have at least one sex scene. Romantic comedies with dialogue between the two lead characters about safe sex, condom usage and sexual history can spark a conversation between a real life couple on a date.

Movies hold the potential for a great deal of power. Groups of friends start congregating at movie theaters as early as middle school. The ritual considers through high school graduation and beyond, especially in small cities and towns where there isn’t much else to do aside from go to the movies.

We applaud films that expose viewers to content and conversations about using condoms and participating in safe sex. Our company has a commitment to promoting safe sex and we salute those who join us in this effort. Reaching teens and young adults requires something that catches their attention. Embedding it in the comedy, action and horror films they are already viewing is a great way to accomplish this goal.

It’s true that traditional date methods are classic and respectful, but they can also cut short what could have been a beautiful relationship. The following’s a top-ten list of unique and fun activities to plan for a non-traditional date.

10. Game Night
This dating activity is a bit on the tame side for those not choosing to get too extreme just yet. Schedule a game night in which you and your date play anything, from classic board games to newly released video games.

9. Sporting Event
This activity is a great way to get to know one another while sharing a pleasant experience with an interest you both like. Even if your date likes a team that you don’t care for, consider offering to go to the game anyway.

8. Circus/Carnival
The circus is a fun and playful place to get to know your date. Bright lights, music, games, and rides will keep both of you in awe while enjoying each other’s company.

7. Arcade
Just as fun as the circus, but not nearly as expensive, the arcade is a great old school play ground full of close and personal opportunities for love to bloom.

6. Shooting Range
The shooting range is for the more rough and tough couple who enjoy danger. It’s a great choice, even if you’re scheduling a date with someone who’s never experienced it before.

5. Mountain Hiking
If you’re interested in the outdoors and exercise, this activity may be a great choice for your date. Enjoy beautiful sceneries while breaking a good sweat.

4. Urban Exploration
Urban exploration is the act of exploring unknown and unique areas, such as abandoned houses presumed to be haunted. This can be a very creepy experience, creating a very personal atmosphere between you and your date.

3. Road Trip
Are you a wild child with the compulsion to do crazy things? Consider going on a weekend road trip with a date. This activity is a little risky for those just getting to know each other, but it can cause sparks to fly if the mood’s right.

2. Strip Club
This choice definitely isn’t for anyone, but it can be a fun, intimate, or funny experience for couples on a first date. If you’re worried about things getting a little steamy, browse all kinds of bedroom supplies, such as small to large condoms, at retailers offering personal products. On Saturday, December 1, 2012 the world will once again take a day to bring awareness to the fact that HIV/AIDS survives and has become pandemic, killing thousands of people worldwide each year.
AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome) is defined as “a human disease characterized by progressive destruction of the body’s immune system. It is widely accepted that AIDS results from infection with HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus), although this hypothesis is not without controversy.” We have come to realize that the virus is blind; it doesn’t discriminate between good men and bad men. The virus doesn’t recognize gender, race, or sexual orientation; anyone can be infected.
Every nine and a half minutes someone in the U.S. is infected with the HIV virus and one in five people are living with the infection and don’t even know it. In the United States alone over one million people are living with HIV and in the world it is estimated it affects 30.6 million adults and 3.4 million children. Since first being reported the HIV/AIDS virus has killed more than 25 million people worldwide. Why is it that we are still not practicing safe sex?
By using a condom and/or dental dam every time you have any type of sex where fluids can be exchanged. Using a condom and/or dental dam greatly reduces your risk of contracting the virus by more than half. There are many options available when it comes to condoms. It is recommended that you use latex male condoms, polyisoprene male condoms and the FC2 female condom. The HIV virus cannot pass through the above mentioned materials. Avoid condoms made from animal intestines. It is important to remember that condoms are the best method to prevent transmitting or contracting any sexually transmitted infections (STIs) outside of complete abstinence. Birth control can only prevent pregnancy; you remain at risk for HIV/AIDS, and other STIs. So for a woman if she has sex with a man that is infected with HIV and their only protection is birth control then she has a high risk of contracting the virus.
If the risk of contracting an STI or HIV/AIDS isn’t enough to convince you that taking 5 seconds to put on a condom is a good idea, what about contracting one of the countless other STIs out there? Everything from herpes to hepatitis, chlamydia to gonorrhea can be prevented through properly using a condom every time you have sexual intercourse. Not all can be cured and some left untreated can cause sterilization. For some, yes, you can take the proper antibiotics to get rid of the infection, but what many don’t realize is that even though it may be ‘cured’ the affects can still linger. For instance by contracting an STI once leaves you at greater risk to contract it again. Some STIs such as chlamydia can lead to infertility in women. Studies found that those who actively have sexual intercourse without using any type of barrier method such as condoms and/or dental dams almost double their chances of contracting an STI than those who use condoms on a regular basis.
With all the information and facts about practising safe sex right at our fingertips it seems unfathomable that people are having unprotected sex. If the young people of today just took ten extra seconds to stop, think and put on a condom, we would be that closer to world without AIDS. It sounds like a stretch, but the education and information is out there we just need to put it into practice. For every person that takes that step to actively practice safe sex every time not only protects their health, but protects their future and moves us closer to a world without AIDS. Sex is something that is meant to be enjoyed. One shouldn’t have to fear contracting something from having sex, when by simply using a condom can put that fear to rest.
As much as there is a stigma on HIV/AIDS we can’t ignore the fact that there is one on using condoms. Coming from a very sheltered background where abstinence was the only thing taught to me I grew up with that stigma about sex and condoms. As I’ve grown I’ve learned that we need to fight to remove this stigma and re-educate young people about the importance of safe sex. With the increase of STIs and transmission rate of HIV/AIDS going up we can’t afford to ignore it anymore. We’re going to have sex whether society likes it or not so why not teach us how to do it safely. Young people should know they have easy access to ways to being safe. There is no age limit on who can buy condoms. There is no shame in obtaining or using condoms because it means you are educated in the risks of unsafe sex and you also care about protecting yourself, your partner, and your future. We can’t pretend the risks associated with unprotected sex; STIs, HIV/AIDS, or pregnancy, belong to only certain groups of people.
The theme for World AIDS day this year is “Getting to Zero.” This is a goal I can aspire to. Helping us get to an AIDS free world starts with me and I plan to do my part to protect my future. You should consider participating as well.

In the 1990s there was a distinct movement in the commercial hip hop industry to promote condom use, with some rappers even devoting entire songs to “jimmy hats” and the like. The movement had some success in, at the very least, causing listeners to think about condom use. The same can, and should, be tried on a larger scale in film and other forms of popular culture.

Characters need not pull out a condom right before on-screen lovemaking if the film’s producers do not wish it. Natural and believable situations could include having a character buy condoms online or at a store. Two friends may get into an argument over whether ultra thin condoms really lead to better lovemaking.

The point is this: film as popular culture needs to get over its taboo against on-screen condom use and discussion. This can be done in a way that is natural and enhances rather than detracts from story lines.
